When to move on

This is one of the questions I get most.

Most play-alongs give you two tempos. The slow one is for learning the moves. The fast one is for pushing yourself.

  • Clean at the fast tempo after a few tries?Move on.
  • Can't get one clean rep?Slow down.

When you slow down, check your pick grip, your string changes and your tension. My tempos are a guide, not a rule.

And remember: you shouldn't sound amazing in practice. If you do, you're only playing what you can already play.
