A Quick Note From Bernth

If you’ve ever noticed yourself rushing ahead of the metronome as things get faster, this lesson is for you. Even when you’re technically playing the correct note values, timing can still fall apart once tension and anticipation creep in. This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from players working on speed.

In this video, I want to show you one of my favorite ways to work on timing by simplifying things as much as possible. By temporarily removing the fretting hand and working with dead notes, you can focus entirely on rhythm, note spacing, and staying relaxed with the click. This makes it much easier to feel when you’re rushing or dragging and to correct it early.

This is a practice approach I still use regularly, both as a warm-up and as a timing reset when things feel off. Take it slow, stay relaxed, and let the click guide you instead of fighting it.

Enjoy the lesson,
